Book Review: Escaping from Houdini by Kerri Maniscalco

So, I’ve been on this book for a while due to my busy schedule and the want to finish the audiobook version since I’d started it with that; however, I finally broke down because I just wanted to finish it so I could move onto the next book. I’m so glad I finally did, and I’m even more excited to share with you my review of the novel.

OK… where to even begin with this beautiful masterpiece? This is the third novel I’ve read by Maniscalco and once again, she did not disappoint. Whether it be her fantastic characters, the charming wit in the dialogue, or the breathtaking descriptions and never-ending mystery, this author knows how to craft a tantilizing tale.

Audrey-Rose Wadsworth is a truly divine heroine for any novel, and the way Maniscalco has made her out in her “Stalking Jack the Ripper” series is a sight to behold. With every turn of the page, the reader is on the edge of their seat wondering what she’s going to do next in order to solve the challenges she faces whether they be an internal romantic or personal struggle, or the outward threat of a murderer. Thomas Cresswell is as dashingly handsome as his ego is large, and the wit that Maniscalco crafts for his tongue to spew as a deliciously toxic venom is something I live for in these novels. I’ll say it once again; she does not disappoint with her third novel in the series.

Just like the two novels prior to this one, the mystery had me guessing the entire way through. I never knew who the murderer was, and I was struggling right alongside our main characters to solve the case. The immanent sense of danger was very real as a new death threatened with every coming day. I’ve never been a huge mystery of historical fiction buff, and while I will warn that Maniscalco takes artistic liberties on historical facts, I am quickly becoming a huge fan of the two genres. She blends them together seamlessly and gives us history lessons in the process—the best way to learn, if you ask me.

For anyone thinking about picking up the series, don’t for one second hesitate. Fair warning, though, be prepared for vivid descriptions and imagery of death and gore, though also be ready for a wonderful romance story. A deadly and delicious combination. Buy your copy on Amazon!
